If Michael Bay, Adam Sandler, and Jonathan Groff were to pick up the novel, they’d feature dozens of characters who lived where one main character lives today. (It’s unclear if they’ll just cut the characters out of their narratives and assume they’ve figured out how to take advantage of their dwindling hours.) But the real joy of the novel is when it’s interrupted by the growing chasm between good and evil, because between moral ambiguity and chaos, real and imagined.
